History

International vocational championships have existed since the early 1950s. Originally founded in Spain, several nations, including Germany, were already participating in the competitions by 1953. Following an initial motivation rooted in peace-building, the WorldSkills network quickly recognized the enriching educational impact of vocational competitions. Since then, WorldSkills International has evolved into a global organization.

WorldSkills Europe was founded in 2007 as part of the international WorldSkills network. The first EuroSkills competition was held in 2008. The European vocational championships also take place every two years, alternating with WorldSkills.

EuroSkills highlights the importance of vocational competitions as a development tool for skilled professionals. They serve as the benchmark for excellence in training and the professional future of Europe. At the same time, the competitions promote European cooperation—bringing industry, governments, and educators together in close collaboration. EuroSkills offers inspiration to Europe’s youth and sends a powerful signal against the skills shortage. The WorldSkills Europe network currently comprises 36 members. In 2027, for the first time in the 18-year history of WorldSkills Europe, two nations—Germany and Luxembourg—will jointly host the competitions.
